What is a DBT group?

DBT stands for Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. If you would like to learn more about DBT as it is run in a full program here is a great link:  In a DBT group, members will learn skills within four different modules. 

Mindfulness: This does not necessarily mean meditation. During the mindfulness module you will learn how to be more aware and present in day to day life. I like to think of it as slowing your mind while your body is still moving

Interpersonal Effectiveness: In this module you will learn how to ask for what you want and say no in a way that people are more likely to listen and understand what you are saying.

Emotion Regulation: In this module you will learn how to define, feel, and manage your emotions. This is my favorite module. While it can be challenging, it can be extremely rewarding.  

Distress Tolerance: In this module you will learn skills to decrease your emotions so that you are more likely to apply other skills. You will also learn about acceptance. 

What Can I expect from group? 
The group is one hour long. The first minute will be dedicated to a brief mindfulness. This is followed by  10-15 minutes where members are able to share skill use and questions. We will then learn and practice the next skill in the module. 

Wait, there is homework?
Each week you will be expected to practice the previous learned skills. This group is not effective without outside practice.  You will get out what you put in to group. The amount of time you spend outside of group on the material is up to you.

How much do I have to share?
There will be space to share how you used skills, and questions that you have. There will not be space to share in depth personal stories. I strongly recommend having an individual therapist for processing while in this group. 

How long does it take to complete the modules?
It will take approx. 18-20 weeks to review all of the material in all four modules. 

How does teletherapy work?
We will all meet via video conferencing.  Once we decide this is a good fit for you, a link will be sent inviting you to the group. The zoom platform in required for the platform that I use.  All parties will be live at the same time on the same screen. I ask that you commit to being in front of a working computer during your scheduled time in a space where no one else can see your computer and where there is little to no background noise. 

What if teletherapy does not sound right for me?
Teletherapy is not for everyone. I do not have a live group running at this time. I am happy to refer out to trusted colleagues. 

How do I get started?
We will set up an initial consultation in order to discuss logistics, norms, expectations and paperwork. Once this is completed I will give a date for the next opening in group.
